Blackjack was first played in French casinos under the name “Twenty-One” in the eighteenth century. When blackjack (also written black-jack in French) was introduced in the United States, it was not very popular. Casinos then tried to attract players by creating various bonuses. The name blackjack comes from a casino bonus in which a player holding both the Jack of Spades and the Ace of Spades received a payout of 10:1. Since the Jack of Spades had primary importance, and spade cards are black, the name blackjack was adopted and has remained to this day, even though the bonus associated with this hand has been abolished. In France, blackjack was authorized again in 1969, and since then the game has enjoyed considerable popularity. A Blackjack pays 3 to 2.
Rules
How Blackjack is played
Blackjack is a card game that is easy to understand but rich in strategy, where the objective is to beat the dealer without exceeding a total of 21 points.
Game Procedure:
Each player places an initial bet before the cards are dealt.
The dealer deals two cards to each player and to himself. The players’ cards are visible, while the dealer keeps one card face down.
Numbered cards are worth their face value, face cards are worth 10 points, and the Ace is worth 1 or 11 points, depending on which is more advantageous for the player.
Players then decide on their action:
Hit: receive an additional card.
Stand: keep their current total.
Double: double the initial bet and receive only one additional card.
Split: if the first two cards are identical, players may split them into two separate hands with an additional bet.
Objective:
Obtain a total as close as possible to 21 without exceeding it. If a player exceeds 21, they automatically lose. At the end, the dealer reveals the hidden card and draws until reaching at least 17 points. If the dealer exceeds 21, all remaining players automatically win.
Winning Conditions:
If the player has a higher total than the dealer without exceeding 21, the player wins.
If the player obtains a Blackjack (21 points with the first two cards), the player is paid 1.5 times the bet, unless the dealer also has a Blackjack.
